Council webcasts: “Warts and all or not at all”

by Cllr Karen Chilvers on January 31, 2013

WATCH THE WEBCAST EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT HERE!

So, our “open and transparent” council has taken the link to last night’s Environment Panel off the webcast page. This is the meeting that saw me and a colleague called something that starts with T and rhymes with hat, admission that figures on the council’s website were altered to look better, the Tories storming out before the meeting ended and the opposition taking over to conclude meeting.

It is a mystery why the webcast has been removed from the library.  Luckily, I have a link!

The managing director made this decision, I hope it is not at the request of a Conservative councillor.

An investigation is underway but the fact remains, you cannot pick and choose which meetings are available for the public to view, because we are then wandering into some serious censorship and propaganda territory.

IF YOU BELIEVE ALL COUNCIL MEETINGS SHOULD BE WEBCAST SO YOU CAN SEE HOW YOUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES CONDUCT THEMSELVES, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER IT IS EMBARRASING FOR THE ADMINISTRATION PLEASE COMMENT ON THIS FORM.

Oh, I agree: these things should be freely available.

One mildly annoying thing, here, though … ?

Is the simple fact I have to go and download Microsoft’s Silverlight plugin, in order to watch the thing.

Brentwood Council’s site is the only site I have to do this for.

Why do I have to use Silverlight: when all the other sites I use are using Flash, or HTML5, Karen … ?

    Hi Karen
I heard about the Environment Panel meeting, this cannot be right to take the Webcast away from public viewing.
Can you sent me the link please, I would like to take a look.

    Kind Regards

How ridiculous. What irritates most is the fact that as council tax payers, we pay for such silliness!

    • You pay for councillors to spend time in meetings and work for you. You pay an additional sum to Chairs to represent the whole borough and, perhaps, to stay to the end of a meeting….listening to what cllrs are raising on behalf of their residents.
