St James Road – how to object
January 11th, 2012 by Cllr Karen Chilvers
Hopefully, the Brentwood Gazette will be carrying this story today. If you would like to object, feel free to take some of the information from below from my objection and add anything else you think of!
You can email your objection to planning@brentwood,gov.uk, post it to Planning Department, Brentwood Council, Ingrave Road, Brentwood CM15 8AY or have your say on www.brentwood.gov.uk.
- Over-development of the St James Road/Rollason Way area by cramming in another 24 flats with insufficient amenity space.
- Only 0.8 parking space per property in this area which will further exacerbate the well-known parking issues in the area. Where are those visiting the shops or working in the offices to park without further parking problems being created? There are only about 35 parking spaces in Rollason Way and there are nnot nearly enough for the current residents.
- This is an over-large development, 2-3 storeys above the current Brunel House
- This will create a dark tunnel in St James Road as the last chink of light is removed by the proximity of other tall buildings such as Premier Inn and 1 St James Road.
- The area is already characterised by empty retail and office space.
- The Warley area is overcrowded and, again, this will strain the infracstructure of the area (doctors, education etc)
- Anti-social behaviour is reported often in this area
- There is a lack of play facilities for young children on this site.
- Traffic movements are also a concern here
- It will increase traffic through Chase Road and into Kings Road and turn-arounds in Rollason Way and Wharf Road.
Feel free to get in touch with any concerns on this matter.

As well as fully agreeing with all of the above points i would like to also point out that at times during the week day i struggle to drive out of the street due to the parking outside Brunel House. Last week the bin lorry couldn’t get through and half a dozen cars waiting behind had to turn around and access Wharf Road via Chase road. There is no way a fire engine would have got through putting at risk all the Base flats and houses, the safety and emergency concerns should be a priority to the rejection as well as the acceptance that there is a general parking issue in the area.
Also, in terms of anti-social behaviour issues – they are increasing all the time, all residents are beginning to dread school holidays and the longer days coming in. All the narrow lanes, dark roads encourage people not from the area to hang out, as well as the more well known residents. It’s very intimidating and still the only time police patrol the area is early on weekday mornings.
The drug problem in the area still carries on as normal. In fact they don’t even hide the fact anymore. All residents know where these people live and for more than a year now they continue.
Is this area to become a ‘no go’ area in Brentwood? If current issues cannot be tackled how can we expect to deal with further development?
I completely object to the 24 planned flats in St James’ Road, the area is completly crammed at present and there are parking problems within the immediate area without 24 extra flats and not enough extra car parking spaces. Crest Nicholson have added to the parking problems by placing orange and yellow barriers in Rollason Way forcing cars further into the road and causing an obstruction for the emergency services, there is great concern in Rollason Way for Health & Safety and the extra flats will cause more of a conjestion than there already is.
[...] If you don’t want that to happen, you really need to put your objection in by about 3pm today – email or comment on the council website. You’ll find a template email and instructions here. [...]
I object to these flats being built. As a local resident, this road has become overcrowded, ugly and unsafe to live in because of the sheer volume of properties in this road and surrounding roads. Why spoil a lovely town like Brentwood for the sake of greedy developers?
I also strongly object, agreeing as a resident in the same terms as my fellow residents above!!! Enough is enough!
