Speeding issues raise their ugly heads again

by Cllr Karen Chilvers on March 13, 2011

Six months ago, I asked for the speeding issues in Honeypot Lane and London Road to be brought to committee.  It’s quite clear that neither the 20mph zone in the former or the 30mph zone in the latter are working.

So, after talking to a resident about the issue by email today, I have tried again.  This is my email to the members requests system:

About six months ago, I asked for this issue to go on the agenda.  Can this be put on the next agenda, as well as London Road speeding, for a discussion on:

- the success of the 20mph speed limit in Hneypot Lane which is certainly not working.
- what measures, I am suggesting speed humps, could be installed.

- results of a speed survey in London Road.
- whether the provision of a speed camera is allowed
- whether a further VAS sign could be installed where I originally requested it, at the junction of Kavanaghs/London/Honeypot.

It would be interesting to hear from the police at this meeting too.

Traffic/Speed on Chase Road.
I think quite a bit of traffic uses Chase Road and then Kings Chase as a way of turning right to go up Warley Hill. This due to the no right turn at the end of St James’s Road into Warley Hill. (Those that don’t choose to ignore the sign!)
Doing this avoids the need to go through the light controlled pedestrian crossing near the junction of Kings Road and Queens Road, twice, and having to go right round the roundabout and getting tangled up in the congestion there.
Removal of the right turn ban at the end of St James’s Road would, I think reduce some of that traffic.
Also there is an increase in the number of vans that park in Chase Road, could not the Council impose a higher parking charge for these types of vehicles. We had a Luton van with a parking permit outside our house for nearly a week some time ago.
I would be happy to see 24 hour permit only parking here. We have visitor permits for our visitors.
Although not an easy turn it is not impossible.

I think you’re right about that, but a right turn at the end of St James Road would be very dangerous, especially at rush hour. However, I agree that something to prevent the high volume of traffic through Chase Road is needed – possibly a pinch point? Let me talk to officers about this, although not easy as they are in Chelmsford and not Brentwood.

Fact is too many properties (voted for by Tories) = too many cars = too much traffic.

I think there is an argument for 24-hour resident parking zones here.
